Appraising Your Collection

It’s no secret that trading cards have experienced a boom over the last few years, and now there is no shortage of websites and apps that collectors can use to track and appraise their collections.

Most commonly used are the TCG Player website and eBay for researching recently sold prices of cards (known to collectors as "comping"), but these are not without their flaws, and often become a point of contention amongst collectors. From what I've experienced, TCG tends to overprice vintage cards and eBay often overprices modern.

We all want to believe that our cards are worth top dollar, but we also need to be fair and understand the ebbs and flows of the market. I’ve found that using a combination of the two websites will help to find an average price for your cards.

More recently, I discovered the Collectr app, which tracks card prices and market trends for you. All you have to do is search for the card you want and add it to your portfolio. You immediately have a price for that card based on its condition. Collectr will also track the value of your entire collection as you input more. You can even add your graded slabs to this app, though I have noticed that some of the prices aren’t completely accurate for these.

The reality is that card prices fluctuate so quickly that it’s difficult to truly track, but so far it seems to me that Collectr is the most accurate and helpful in appraising entire collections. It’s also free to download and use, which is a nice perk!
